ABOUT THE COLLEGE Bates Technical College is a comprehensive state-supported school serving primarily the Pierce County area. Founded in 1940, the College is the state’s largest technical college with 4,943 and 5,076 full- and part-time students enrolled in the 2004-05 and 2003-04 school years, respectively. The College provides educational programs with more than 1,000 full- and part-time employees. The Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges has accredited the College since 1986. The College is one of 34 community and technical colleges in the statewide system. Its operating budget during 2004-05 was approximately $40 million, of which the state apportionment is approximately $18 million. In addition, the College has maintained capital funds of approximately $2.5 million. A five-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor is responsible for oversight of the College operations.
AUDIT HISTORY The College joined the state college system in 1991 after being operated as a technical/vocational school by the Tacoma School District. We audit the College every two years. The College has consistently exhibited a strong control environment. This audit marked the sixth consecutive year no findings were reported for the College.
