The Commission on Judicial Conduct works to protect the integrity of the judicial process and to
promote public confidence in Washington's courts. The Commission also serves to improve and
strengthen the judiciary by creating a greater awareness of proper judicial behavior in judges.
The Commission states its goal is to preserve judicial independence and public accountability.
The Commission acts on complaints involving judicial misconduct or disability. This process is
separate from the judicial appeals system that allows individual litigants to appeal possible legal
errors. The Commission makes every effort to act in the public interest while safeguarding
individual rights and the reputations of judges from unfounded accusations.
The Commission has 11 members who serve four-year terms: six non-lawyer citizens, three
judges and two lawyers. The non-lawyer citizens are appointed by the Governor, the judges are
selected by their respective associations and the lawyers, who must be admitted to the practice of
law in Washington, are selected by the Washington State Bar Association. Each member has an
alternate member appointed by the same respective authority.
The Commission staff consists of seven full-time employees. The 2005-07 biennium
appropriation is $2,350,000. The Commission has no revenue of any significant amount.
