The Washington Citizen’s Commission on Salaries for Elected Official’s mission and mandate from the public is to attract citizens of the highest quality to public service by basing the salaries of the state's elected officials on realistic standards and paying them according to the duties of their office. The purpose for creating the Commission was to establish proper salaries for the state's elected officials and to remove political considerations from the process. The first commissioners were appointed in February 1987 and began the work of setting the elected officials' salaries that same month. The Commission is responsible for setting the salaries of the elected officials in the Executive, Judicial and Legislative Branches of state government including: • Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, Attorney General, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Commissioner of Public Lands and the Insurance Commissioner • Justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the Court of Appeals, Superior Courts and District Courts • Members of the Legislature The Commission sets the salaries of 479 elected state officials; the majority of the positions are in the Judiciary. The Commission has two half-time employees located in Olympia. The Commission’s operating budget is appropriated by the Legislature. It collects no revenue. The 2006 operating budget was $137,000.
