The Office of Lieutenant Governor, established by the Washington State Constitution, is the
second highest elected office in the state of Washington. The Lieutenant Governor is chosen by
the electorate to serve four-year terms.
The Lieutenant Governor serves as presiding officer of the Washington State Senate and is first
in line of succession to the Governor, acting as Governor when the Governor is incapacitated or
absent from the state. In addition, he or she serves as chair of the Legislative Committee on
Economic Development and International Relations, the primary purpose of which is to promote
trade and economic development in the state.
The agency is staffed with seven employees, including the Lieutenant Governor, and has a twoyear
budget of approximately $1 million.
