The Office of Public Defense administers state funds appropriated to provide legal representation for indigent parents in dependency and termination cases and for appellate indigent defendants. The Office also distributes appropriated funds to counties and cities to improve trial-level public defense services. The Office's public defense service managers consult with counties and cities regarding public defense contracts and other issues. The Office works under the supervision and direction of the Office of Public Defense Advisory Committee to develop and administer programs. The Advisory Committee includes members appointed by the Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court, the Governor, the Court of Appeals, the Washington State Bar Association, and two Senators and two Representatives selected from each of the two largest caucuses by the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively. The Director of the Office is appointed by the Washington State Supreme Court. The Office has 14 employees. Sources of funding include appropriations from the Public Education and Savings Account as well as the General Fund. The operating budget for the 2005-07 biennium was $31.9 million.
