The Sentencing Guidelines Commission is part of the executive branch of state government. The
Commission consists of 20 voting members appointed by the Governor, subject to confirmation
by the Senate. The Commission employs approximately seven full-time staff, including an
Executive Director.
The Commission derives its authority from the Sentencing Reform Act of 1981, which directs the
Commission to evaluate and monitor adult and juvenile sentencing policies and practices, to
recommend modifications to the Governor and the Legislature and to serve as a clearinghouse
and information center on adult and juvenile sentencing. The Commission promotes
accountability and equity in adult and juvenile sentencing, provides accurate and timely
information about sentencing and recommends changes in the criminal justice system. The
2005-07 operating budget is approximately $1.7 million.
