The Washington State Legislature created the Transportation Improvement Board to foster state investment in quality local transportation projects. The Board distributes grant funding, which comes from the revenue generated by three cents of the statewide gas tax, to cities and counties for funding transportation projects. The primary purpose of the Board is to select and administer transportation projects that best address criteria established by the Board. Each funding program has its own set of criteria used to rate project applications. The project selection process for all funding programs is completed annually. The Board has 21 members organized under the provisions of Chapter 167, Laws of 1988 Regular Session, and amended by the 1993 and 1995 Legislatures for the purpose of administering the following programs: • Urban Corridor Program • Urban Arterial Program • Small City Arterial Program • Small City Preservation Program • Sidewalk Program • Road Transfer Program • Route Jurisdiction Transfer The Executive Director and staff run the daily operations of the Board.
