The Port of Tacoma is the sixth largest container port in North America. It is the state’s leading
port in handling automobile imports. Port facilities include five major container terminals, three
multi-purpose terminals, four on-dock intermodal rail yards and several special purpose terminals.
The Port processed 2.1 million, 20-foot equivalent units of containers during 2006.
The Port is governed by five independently elected Commissioners. The Board and the Port’s
228 employees provide for the development and maintenance of harbors and terminals, promote
tourism and foster economic activity in Pierce County. The Executive Director is appointed by the
Board and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Port. The Port’s operating expense
budget for 2006 was $72 million.
