The Port of Vancouver was established in 1912. The Port is governed by three elected Commissioners who serve six-year terms and who are responsible for setting the overall policy and goals for Port operations and development. The Board has delegated the responsibility of the daily operations to an Executive Director. The Board appoints the Auditor and Legal Council. The Port's mission is to provide economic benefit to the community through leadership, stewardship and partnership in marine and industrial development. Located at the transportation hub of the Pacific Northwest on the Columbia/Snake River System, the Port is a transfer point for cargo moving to and from the Pacific Rim and the world. Annually, the Port handles over 525 ocean-going vessels, to include river barges with a total cargo volume exceeding 5 million metric tons. During 2006, the Port had operating revenues of approximately $24.5 million and employed approximately 65 people.
