Spokane County was created in 1879. It is the fourth largest county in the state with an
estimated population of 440,000.
The local economy has traditionally relied on forest products, agriculture and mining. However, it
has diversified to include technology firms, manufacturing companies and service industries. The
County is also home to Fairchild Air Force Base, several institutions of higher education and large
medical centers.
The County has approximately 2,000 employees and operates on a $240 million annual budget.
Property and sales tax revenues represent 36 percent of the County’s resources for
governmental activities.
The County’s executive, legislative and policy-making body is the three-member Board of
Commissioners, each of whom is elected to serve a four-year term.
