The City of Tacoma serves approximately 196,300 citizens in Pierce County and is the second
largest city in the state. The City operates under a council-manager form of government with nine
independently elected, part-time Council Members including the Mayor. The Mayor serves as the
ceremonial head of the City and as a member of the City Council. The Council Members elect a
part-time Deputy Mayor. The City Manager is appointed by the City Council and is responsible
for day-to-day operations of the City.
The 2005-06 City budget of approximately $2.097 billion included $356.1 million for the General
Fund and $1.1 billion for the Tacoma Public Utilities. The City’s 3,776 regular and temporary
employees provide a full range of municipal services including police, Municipal Court, fire, public
works, planning and development, utilities, public facilities, convention center, airport, human
development, community development, human relations, and general administrative and support
services. The Tacoma Metropolitan Parks District provides certain parks and recreation services
on behalf of the City. In addition, the City owns various major facilities including the Tacoma
Dome, Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, Cheney Stadium (a joint venture with Pierce
County) and the Bicentennial Pavilion.
